Cadillac's New Concept EV Has Doors That Open Like Butterfly Wings,

Detroit-based automaker General MotorsCadillac luxury brand unveiled a new EV concept last week called Opulent Velocity.

What Happened: The vehicle, a concept, will not enter production but it is an “experience-based design study” with a low silhouette and the charms of a hypercar.

The key design element, however, is the two butterfly doors that open upwards and out like wings to let the passengers in. The luxury 4-passenger coupe flaunts a light gilded pearl hue on its exterior and metallic dark blue interiors.

"Opulent Velocity is inspired by the dynamic design cues of motorsports in a 2+2 aerodynamic body form," said Magalie Debellis, manager, Cadillac Advanced Design. The company has envisioned it with a 3D widescreen display, a fully digital cockpit, and a racing-inspired steering wheel design, among other elements.

A close equivalent to these doors in a production, affordable electric vehicle is the Tesla Model X which has Falcon wing back doors that open upwards. The cheaper variant of the Model X, however, starts at $79,990.

Why It Matters: Cadillac is currently buoying GM's overall EV sales in the U.S., following the discontinuation of its Chevrolet Bolt EV production in December.

GM sold 21,930 EVs in the second quarter and the Lyriq SUV accounted for 7,294 of its overall sales despite having an EV lineup of seven vehicles.
