Stellantis Unveils 'Game Changer' Ram Pickup EV With Gas-Powered Generator

In an industry-first move, automobile manufacturer Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) has announced plans to produce a unique electric pickup truck named the “Ram 1500 Ramcharger” with a gas-powered electric generator. This innovative design aims to address the range anxiety associated with most electric vehicles.

this dual-powered vehicle operates as a zero-emissions EV until the battery depletes, reported CNBC. At this point, an onboard electric generator, fueled by a 27-gallon, 3.6-liter V6 engine, kicks in to power the vehicle. This mechanism allows the truck to benefit from the fast acceleration of an EV, with some zero-emissions driving, without the limitation of battery range.

“This is the ultimate answer for the battery-electric truck. No one else has got anything else like it,” said Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis

“This is going to be a game changer for battery-electric trucks,” he added.

The Ram 1500 Ramcharger is expected to launch for sale in late 2024 alongside the previously announced all-electric Ram 1500 truck. Stellantis estimates that the Ramcharger will have a range of up to 690 miles, including up to 145 miles powered by a 92-kilowatt-hour battery when fully charged.

Stellantis has yet to announce the pricing of the Ramcharger, which was unveiled as part of a redesign of current gasoline-powered Ram 1500 pickups for the 2025 model year.

The Ramcharger is aimed to serve as a bridge between traditional trucks with internal combustion engines and all-electric ones, addressing the current challenges regarding charging infrastructure and range anxiety, especially when the vehicles are towing.
