Abortion Decriminalized Nationwide In Mexico, Supreme Court Announces

Abortion has now been decriminalized throughout Mexico, as per a recent ruling from the country’s Supreme Court.

According to The Hill, the decision was made on Wednesday, two years after the Court had decriminalized abortion within the northern state of Coahuila, sparking a nationwide movement for the cause.

The Supreme Court’s First Chamber declared the former law, which criminalized abortion as per the Federal Criminal Code, unconstitutional on the grounds of violating women’s human rights and those of other gestating individuals, as was announced on social media.

Abortion laws were previously the responsibility of individual Mexican states. Prior to this ruling, 12 of Mexico’s 32 states had already decriminalized the procedure. Mexico City was the first jurisdiction to do so, 15 years ago, and the state of Aguascalientes was the most recent, having decriminalized it last week.

This ruling comes in the wake of Colombia’s decriminalization of abortion last year, despite the traditionally strict abortion laws in Latin America, a predominantly Catholic region. Only four countries in Latin America – Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic – still outlaw abortion under all circumstances.

Meanwhile, this liberalization of abortion access contrasts with many U.S. states, which have increased restrictions on the procedure following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last year.
