More Bacon Please

Recently, CNBC reported on a motorcycle made by Hormel Foods Corp (NYSE: HRL) that runs entirely on refined bacon grease.

CNBC reporter Jane Wells bent down beneath a mounted biker as he revved up the engine and she smelt deep into the exhaust pipe.

“That smells like bacon. That is crazy,” exclaimed Wells.

The biker, Eric Pierson, drove the bike across the country while getting 80 to 100 miles per gallon of grease, which is about the equivalent of diesel fuel.

“It takes about 30 pounds of bacon to make a gallon of bacon grease, and a little more than a gallon of bacon grease to make a gallon of fuel, so it's not really cost efficient,” Wells pointed out.

Hormel's vice president of new products marketing Steve Venenga responded: “It was more like ‘why wouldn't you do that?' I mean, it was just such as great idea.”

Bacon prices are currently very high, and Hormel shares are up by 20 percent from last year, making the marketing concept an easy gimmick to ride.
