Strauss-Kahn May Be Free Within Days

The focus of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn case has shifted dramatically to question the credibility of the maid accusing the former head of the IMF of rape.

Questions are being raised because the 32-year-old maid apparently lied more than once during the investigation to date, and she has ties to a drug dealer. Naturally, Strauss-Kahn's defense team is leaping on the opportunity to tear the woman to shreds. That is, after all, their job. But how much of it is little more than mud-raking?

The fact that she might know a drug dealer really isn't too surprising. She's a maid, probably earning minimum wage and not living in a great area. She might well be surrounded by some less then decent people. That doesn't mean that she wasn't raped.

Of more concern are the reports that she received deposits into her bank account totaling $100,000. If true, that would suggest that she is involved in some illegal activities. Still, doesn't mean she wasn't raped.

Here is the really sticky one. Apparently she lied to investigators, saying that she had been raped in the past and later recounting the story. If Strauss-Kahn walks, it will likely be because of this. If she really did cry wolf, prosecution will have a hell of a time making any of her accusations stick.

She also claimed to have been subjected to genital mutilation in Guinea, and the validity of this is being called into question too. This isn't really relevant, but if she did lie it does prove that she has a tendency to be dishonest. What is certain is that, what looked like a surefire conviction (or pay off) a few weeks ago, now looks to have been completely reversed.
