Sony Reveals PS5 Sales Numbers, Sets Sights On Historic 25 Million Units

In its latest earnings report, Sony Group Corp.'s (NYSE: SONY) Interactive Entertainment has set out an ambitious goal of selling 25 million units of its popular PlayStation 5 in the current fiscal year.

If achieved, this target would break all previous sales records for any PlayStation console in a single financial year.

"We aim to continuously accelerate the penetration of PS5 and aim for PS5 sell-in units for the current fiscal year to be 25 million units, the highest ever for any [PlayStation] console in history," the Japanese company said.

According to Sony, the PS5 has already sold more than 38 million units since its launch, making it one of the most successful gaming consoles in history behind the PS2, which has sold 159 million units.

The electronics giant also revealed it shipped 6.3 million PS5 consoles in the three months ending on March 31, 2022, bringing the total sales of the console to 38.4 million units. This marked a remarkable increase from the 2 million units shipped during the same quarter of the previous year.

The impressive figures meant Sony shipped a total of 19.1 million PS5 consoles during the fiscal year 2022, beating its earlier forecast of 18 million.

As component shortages that plagued the video game industry wane, the PlayStation 5 is showing promising signs of a strong year ahead.

In January, Sony's president Jim Ryan referred to the scarcity of semiconductor chips: "We truly appreciate the support and patience of the PlayStation community as we managed unprecedented demand amid global challenges over the past two years.

"PS5 supply improved toward the end of last year, and I'm happy to share that December 2022 was the biggest month ever for PS5 console sales and that we have now sold more than 30 million units to consumers worldwide."

Ryan reassured supply issues were solved completely: “Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at a retailer globally, starting from this point forward.”
