NVIDIA To 'Shine' With Smart Autos At CES

The 50th annual Consumer Electronic Show (CES) is scheduled to begin on January 5. The most excitement in the semiconductor space will likely be centered on NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), Brean Capital’s Mike Burton said in a report. He maintained a Hold rating on the company.

CEO Jen-Hsun Huang will be making a keynote.

“We believe he will be focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), self-driving cars, VR, and gaming as these are major drivers to the NVDA story, but we also look forward to possibly 2 updates to its Shield TVbox,” Burton wrote.

Smart Autos And Self-Driving Cars

Referring to smart automobiles and self-driving cars, Burton said these were “inevitable” and there were questions around “When” and “How Many,” rather than “If.” He expects the focus to be on vehicle intelligence, including driver-assist and self-driving autos, as well as on the connected car.

CES has been a forum for auto OEMs [original equipment manufactures] to display their latest and best developments and all major OEMs and aftermarket solutions providers were likely to attend the conference.

“We expect NVDA to shine in this category with its focus on moving towards self-driving autos,” the analyst commented.

In September, NVIDIA announced Xavier, a SOC featuring an 8-core CPU and a 512-core GPU on a single chip, which could power self-driving cars. The company indicated that Xavier could perform “20 trillion operations per second while only consuming 20 watts of power, which is much less power than the predecessor chip DRIVE PX2 that had been announced last year would be used in some of Volvo’s vehicles,” Burton mentioned.
