Andy Cohen Is Terrified By Netflix And Amazon: TV Is 'The Wild West Right Now'

Is Bravo's "Real Housewives" executive producer Andy Cohen worried about the growing threat coming from non-traditional media outlets such as Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN)?

Based on what Cohen told CNBC, his concerns may be legitimate.

"It's the wild west right now," he said during an interview with CNBC. "We're not only competing with the 500 other cable channels, but Netflix and Amazon, who seem to have unending bales of money."

For example, Netflix plans on spending around $6 billion in cash on content, CNBC noted. By comparison, this level of spending is the equivalent of 600 episodes (or 60 seasons) of HBO's "Game of Thrones."

Cohen added that Netflix and Amazon "live in a bank" and they can "spend anything," which could be viewed as not only "terrifying" but a "scary time" for cable networks and content producers.

Cohen suggested the rapid shift towards online and on-demand streaming content has given cable networks an unfavorable title of being "traditional." In fact, many people within the coveted under 33-year-old age group don't even own a cable box but still "watch TV everywhere but TV."

"That's scary to cable providers and programmers," he concluded.
