Tesla CEO Elon Musk Considers Making Steering Yoke Stationary While Cybertruck Parks Itself

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk on Monday said that the EV giant will alter parking assistance features on the Cybertruck to ensure that the steering yoke does not move while the vehicle navigates itself into a parking spot.

What Happened: “We should change that so the yoke is stationary, as it is not mechanically coupled to the wheels. The same goes for when it is on Autopilot,” Musk wrote on X, formerly Twitter, in response to a video by a Tesla enthusiast showing the Cybertruck yoke steering by itself as it seeks to park without human intervention.

Cybertruck employs a steer-by-wire technology, meaning there is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. The sensors in the steering column instead communicate electronically with the steering racks.

However, the enthusiast has questioned how the yoke will reset to the right position if it does not move with the wheels if the driver decides to intervene in the vehicle’s automated process. Musk is yet to clarify the same.

Why It Matters: The Cybetruck was recently equipped with parking assistance features. The vehicle is yet to be equipped with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology, or FSD.

FSD is the most advanced version of Tesla’s driver assistance features termed autopilot.

The names, however, are a misnomer as the features do not make the vehicle autonomous or capable of self-driving but require active driver supervision. However, FSD allows for auto lane change, navigating interchanges, and more.

FSD release for the Cybertruck is slated for September, Tesla’s senior executive Ashok Elluswamy said late last month.
