Elon Musk Gets Community Noted On X After Claiming There Are 'Known Vulnerabilities' In Signal Messaging App That He Once Backed
Elon Musk got fact-checked on his own social media platform, X, formerly Twitter, after he raised concerns about the security of messaging app Signal.
What Happened: On Tuesday, Musk took to X to express his doubts about the security of the Signal messaging app, citing "known vulnerabilities."
"There are known vulnerabilities with Signal that are not being addressed. Seems odd…"
Musk's post has since garnered significant attention, inviting a response from Signal president Meredith Whittaker, who not only denied the presence of any security vulnerabilities but also noted that the company fixes "valid issues quickly."

She also shed light on Signal's data collection policies as well as the company's security practices, including cryptography, professional audits, and its open-source development model.
Musk has also been fact-checked via X's "Community Notes" feature – a note attached to his post says there are no security vulnerabilities for current versions, which can be checked on the security vulnerability tracker CVEdetails.
Why It Matters: Musk’s comments about Signal are significant given his history with the app. Musk has been a vocal supporter of Signal, promoting it as a secure alternative to other messaging apps, including Meta Platforms Inc.-owned Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
His endorsement of Signal in the past has led to a surge in its downloads and user base.
Back in 2021, Musk also disclosed that he had donated his funding of the app to Signal before and that he would "donate more."
