Trump Not Sure If He Can Work With Mitch McConnell: 'He'll Probably End Up Endorsing Me'

In a recent interview, Donald Trump hinted at a potential re-election bid and expressed uncertainty about working with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky).

What Happened: Trump, during a town hall on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” on Tuesday, questioned the possibility of collaborating with McConnell if he were to be re-elected as president, reported NBC News.

“He’ll probably end up endorsing me. I don’t know that I can work with him,” Trump said.

Their relationship has been strained since McConnell criticized Trump’s role in the Capitol riot. Trump has further intensified his attacks on McConnell and recently played a role in thwarting a bipartisan border deal that McConnell supported.

Despite this, McConnell has not publicly endorsed Trump’s re-election bid, although he has acknowledged that he will likely be the GOP nominee.

During the town hall, Trump also commented on the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, comparing it to his legal troubles and suggesting that Navalny would have been better off advocating from outside Russia.

Why It Matters: The relationship between Trump and McConnell has been strained since the Capitol riot. This rift is noteworthy in light of the upcoming 2024 presidential race, where Trump has been leading the polls to become the Republican nominee despite facing federal charges.

On the other hand, McConnell has been focusing on the 2024 Senate election and is determined to win back the majority, even if it means supporting Trump. The dynamics between the two leaders could have a significant impact on the future of the Republican Party.
