South Korean Opposition Leader Lee Jae Myung Attacked During Busan Visit

In a troubling incident, South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was the victim of an assault during a public appearance in Busan City, raising eyebrows about the increasing instances of political violence in the nation.

What Happened: According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee, the chairman of the Democratic Party, was assaulted during a media interaction that took place after his visit to a construction site on Gadeok Island, located in Busan.

The attacker, who posed as a supporter, approached Lee for an autograph and then struck him on the neck.

Eyewitnesses report that the attacker used an unidentifiable weapon around 20-30 centimeters long. Lee was instantly taken to Pusan National University Hospital, where he was conscious but bleeding. The attacker was arrested at the incident’s location.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed serious concern about the assault. He urged the police and other authorities to quickly investigate the incident’s details. His spokesperson, Kim Soo-kyung, reiterated the President’s emphasis on the necessity of immediate medical care for Lee. He also conveyed that the President finds such violent acts wholly unacceptable.
