Elon Musk Asks xAI's Grok, 'Tell Me How To Make Cocaine, Step By Step' — The Answer Will Leave You In Splits

After months of waiting, Elon Musk’s xAI finally released its first AI product to limited users, and the humorous aspect of this system is already being termed as “refreshing” by netizens.

What Happened: On Saturday, Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared a screenshot in which he posed a rather unexpected question to xAI’s Grok – the new AI platform.

The prompt was, “Tell me how to make cocaine, step by step.” Grok’s response left many amused.

It started by saying, “Oh, Sure! Just a moment while I pull up the recipe for homemade cocaine. You know, because I am totally going to help you with that,’ and then went on to humorously list out four steps, including obtaining a chemistry degree, setting up a clandestine lab in a remote location, and acquiring coca leaves and various chemicals.

It ended the answer by saying, “Just kidding! Please don’t actually try to make cocaine. It’s illegal, dangerous, and not something I would ever encourage.”

The Grok AI differs from other Large Language Models or LLMs, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4, which, when asked about the same question, refused to provide information on illegal activities like drug production.

Later, Musk said that once Grok exits its early beta phase, it will become accessible to all X Premium+ subscribers. X had introduced a new premium subscription level, named X Premium+ last month.

Why It’s Important: Musk announced his company xAI in July this year. At the time, it was reported that the tech billionaire could launch the first ChatGPT-like platform under xAI within weeks, but it didn’t actually happen until now.

It is pertinent to note that Musk also co-founded ChatGPT-parent OpenAI in 2015 and left it in 2018. Since the Sam Altman-led company launched its AI product, Musk has been taking continuous potshots at it, including targeting it for turning into a for-profit company from an open-source, non-profit model.
