The iconic Apple Macintosh was designed to imbibe the early dynamism of The Beatles, as envisioned by the co-founder of the tech giant, Steve Jobs, revealed award-winning designer Clement Mok.

What Happened: At the National Design Awards held at the Smithsonian Design Museum in Manhattan, Mok, a part of the elite design team for the Macintosh, shared insights into the unique design philosophy behind the legendary machine, as per AppleInsider.

Working in close collaboration with Jobs, Mok stated that the design direction mostly revolved around “Whatever Steve Jobs liked,” leading to hundreds of iterations. Jobs, according to Mok, wanted the Macintosh to resemble “the early Beatle, not the later Beatle,” embodying vigor, energy, and soul.

Mok believes this ethos still thrives in Apple’s design strategy today, showcasing meticulous attention to detail and a focus on creating a ‘wow’ effect. He went on to liken Apple to a “very much a fashion brand.”

Why It Matters: Macintosh, launched in 1984, was a revolution in Apple’s personal computer lineup, aiming for an affordable, user-friendly machine for the average consumer.

The design philosophy revealed by Mok underscores Jobs’ vision of challenging conventions and further reaffirms his legacy as a visionary who changed the world.

At the award event, digital design recognition was accorded to Mok, while Arem Duplessis, a group creative director at Apple, won an award for Communication Design.
