California Governor's Team Turns To ChatGPT For Speech, And It Outperformed His Staff Writers

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s team turned to OpenAI’s artificial intelligence-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, for speechwriting, and the results outshone those produced by his staff.

What Happened: During a conversation with Bloomberg, Governor Newsom acknowledged that ChatGPT’s performance exceeded that of his human staff.

He stated, “It wrote a better State of the State than we did,” emphasizing the AI’s ability to provide unique perspectives and insights.

While ChatGPT delivered results in the governor’s voice, the AI-generated content was not used verbatim due to caution.

However, he said they had “fun with Bard and compare and contrast it with ChatGPT” results.

When asked if he believes that AI and the increasing potential for highly convincing deepfakes will have an impact on or alter the course of the upcoming presidential election, he said that this may be the final genuinely ‘fair and free’ election within our lifetime, citing some unnamed credible people they have spoken to.

The governor further suggested that the current influence of bots in directing individuals toward these “micro-cults” is already disproportionately substantial. “That’s pretty alarming when you think about it in those terms.”

Why It’s Important: ChatGPT initially made headlines by reaching 100 million monthly active users within two months of its launch, and it became one of the fastest-growing consumer applications in history.

Now among the top 30 websites globally, ChatGPT faces new challenges from competitors like Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGLBard and Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Bing-powered AI.

However, the technology is far from being perfect.

In July this year, two New York lawyers were slapped with a $5,000 fine after unwittingly falling victim to the creative legal research capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

These chatbots have also gained notoriety for their tendency to produce fabricated information confidently, commonly called “hallucinations.”
