Trump Seeks Support For Giuliani With Golf Club Fundraiser As Former Mayor Grapples With Millions In Unpaid Legal Bills

Former attorney to Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, is seeking to alleviate his mounting legal costs with a fundraiser hosted by the ex-president at his Bedminster golf club.

What Happened: As CNN reported on Thursday, Giuliani, embroiled in a series of legal battles and criminal charges linked to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, is facing debts running into millions. The fundraiser is expected to generate over $1 million for Giuliani’s legal defense fund.

Andrew Giuliani, Rudy’s son, who helped coordinate the fundraiser, mentioned in a radio interview that the event might not cover all of Giuliani’s legal costs, but it would offer the resources needed to build a team to combat what he called “political prosecutions.”

Despite some of Trump’s allies questioning whether he should continue helping Giuliani with his rising legal bills, both men continue to spend time together, recently sharing a meal at Trump’s Bedminster resort.

Giuliani’s legal expenses, estimated by some to be around $5 million, have continued to rise due to several defamation lawsuits over his actions and remarks following the 2020 election. Just last week, Giuliani lost a defamation lawsuit from a pair of Georgia election workers, adding to his financial troubles.

While there’s a debate among Trump’s advisers about his level of support for Giuliani, those close to Trump point to the fundraisers he agreed to sponsor and a payment from his political action committee to help cover some of Giuliani’s debts as signs of his aid.

Why It Matters: Giuliani’s financial predicament has been escalating, with his claims of financial hardship raising questions when contrasted with his private jet travel.

Previously, Giuliani had asked Trump for help with his legal costs. However, their relationship has been strained largely due, to Giuliani’s unsuccessful legal battles on Trump’s behalf.

Despite this tension, Trump’s agreement to host a fundraiser indicates some level of support for his former attorney.
