AirTag To The Rescue: Apple's Tracker Aids Nashville Cops In Swift Car Thief Capture

A recent incident in Nashville highlighted Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) AirTag’s crucial role in helping local police apprehend a car thief. 

What Happened: In Nashville, Tennessee, a car owner’s worst nightmare came true when their vehicle was stolen on Aug. 3. However, this unfortunate event took an unexpected turn, thanks to the clever deployment of an AirTag.

After realizing their car had been stolen, the victim quickly informed the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department about the situation. The key detail that set this case apart was the presence of an AirTag secretly tucked away inside the stolen Dodge Charger Scat Pack, according to local news outlet WSMV4.

The police swiftly initiated their pursuit and collaborated with the Metropolitan Nashville Aviation Unit, which used the AirTag’s signal to track the vehicle’s movement across the city.

The stolen car eventually made an unexpected stop at a local barbershop, where the suspected car thief, identified as Kevonta Brooks, and a passenger entered the establishment. 

Seizing the moment, a police air unit provided a detailed description of Brooks, enabling ground units to move in and take him into custody.

Upon his apprehension, authorities discovered Brooks possessed incriminating evidence, including a vehicle key FOB, a vehicle reprogramming device, and a screwdriver, all stashed in a brown backpack.

The suspect now faces a slew of charges, including vehicle theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle, the report noted. 

Why It’s Important: After its release in 2021, Apple’s AirTag quickly gained popularity as a device meant to assist users in finding their personal items. 

Just last month, this tiny technological marvel helped a Dutch cyclist reclaim her stolen bicycle within an hour. 

However, AirTag has also faced criticism regarding its potential misuse by stalkers, who could exploit the device’s tracking capabilities to monitor unsuspecting individuals without their knowledge.
