Microsoft President Calls For 'Human Control' Over AI To Prevent Weaponization

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s President and Vice-chairman, Brad Smith, has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) needs human control to avoid being weaponized, in an exclusive conversation with CNBC.

“I think every technology ever invented [has] the potential to become both a tool and a weapon. We have to ensure that AI remains subject to human control… we need to ensure that we have humans in control, that we can slow things down or turn things off,” Smith emphasized.

Following the sudden rise of the AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, tech leaders globally have cautioned about the risks posed by AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, along with executives from Google‘s AI arm DeepMind and Microsoft, have compared the human extinction risk posed by AI to that of nuclear warfare.

Smith urged for new laws and regulations to ensure safety breaks in AI technology.

Meanwhile, a March report by Goldman Sachs anticipated that generative AI could impact up to 300 million jobs globally. However, Smith reassured that AI is a tool supplementing human work, not replacing it.
