Climate Protesters, Who Threw Mashed Potatoes On Monet Painting, Now Glue Themselves To Berlin Airport Runway

Climate activists in Germany broke into Berlin's Brandenburg Airport and glued themselves to the runway on Thursday.

What Happened: The protesters, who were members of the climate activism group Letzte Generation, briefly halted air traffic at the Berlin airport after gluing themselves to the tarmac in protest of government inaction on climate change.

"The plane is not a means of transport for ordinary people," Letzte Generation (Last Generation) said in a public statement.

"Most people — about 80 percent of the world's population — have never flown in their lives. One affluent percent of the population is responsible for around half of flight-related greenhouse gas emissions," it added.

Approximately 13 flights were forced to change their course, the airport spokesperson said, after the group, which included a 70-year-old man, gained unauthorized entrance via two separate points in the tarmac’s parameter.

The activist group – which is responsible for multiple stunts, including throwing mashed potatoes on Monet painting – said they "informed the police" before entering the airport.

Meanwhile, a judge at the Rhineland-Palatinate Constitutional Court, Michael Hassemer, said he considered the resistance justified by climate emergency, reported Sky News. “The consequences for humanity of failing to take climate protection measures are in any case so serious that legal impairments through protest are justified to a certain extent by emergency and are therefore acceptable.”
