Sony Celebrates 'Sausage Party' Win Following 'Ghostbusters' Loss

If there was a week Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE: SNE) needed a win, this was it.

Following news that expensive reboot "Ghostbusters" was set to take a $70 million loss, the studio opened "Sausage Party," which over-performed. The "R" rated adult animated comedy, which came from the mind of Seth Rogen and longtime collaborator Evan Goldberg, put solid numbers.

The $19 million film will end up with nearly $34 million over its first three days, which not only makes it the highest grossing animated film to ever open in August, but also the highest grossing "R" animated film to open ever. "Sausage" also siphoned audiences away from Warner Bros. (Time Warner Inc (NYSE: TWX))'s "Suicide Squad," which saw a sharp week-to-week drop.

The "Sausage Party" win bookends the summer for Sony, which started the season with the equally substantial debut of "The Angry Birds Movie" — which to date has made over $100 million domestically and nearly $350 million globally.

In between was the sleeper hit "The Shallows," the under-performing (yet still slightly profitable) "Money Monster" and the aforementioned "Ghostbusters."
