Comcast Doubles Down On Harry Potter With New Exclusive Deal

Share:

Given the success of "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" at Universal Studios, it shouldn't be much of a shock that the company is looking to stay in the magic business.

It was revealed on Monday that Comcast Corporation's (NASDAQ: CMCSA) NBCUniversal has signed a deal granting it the exclusive rights to both the "Harry Potter" films and the upcoming "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them" franchise. The package, estimated at $200 million, is a seven-year deal and includes TV airings and theme park tie-in events.

Until now, the rights had been under the Disney umbrella which was on full display with airings on both ABC and cable network Freeform, but now those showings will switch to NBC as well as cable networks USA and Syfy beginning in 2018.

The one caveat comes with "Beasts" as that will still see its TV debut on HBO as the premium giant has a longstanding deal with Warner Bros. to have the first airing of all the studio's films.
