FCC Cracks Down On Robocalls, Tells Wireless Carriers To Offer Free Call-Blocking Services

It shouldn't come as a surprise that robocalls and telemarketing calls are the biggest source of consumer complaints directed toward the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The federal agency is looking to take steps to alleviate the complaints and protect consumers from unwanted phone calls. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said in an open letter on Friday that he is committed to tackling robocalls "on as many fronts as possible," including implementing new rules, issuing declaratory judgments and even urging the private sector to "step up and stop this scourge."

Wheeler stated that since 2012, the FCC has brought 13 formal enforcement actions to combat unlawful robocalls. Despite this fact, current protection against unwanted calls, such as the FTC's Do Not Call list, may not necessarily be sufficient.

Wheeler continued that he has already made contact with the CEOs of major wireless and wire-line phone companies and requested their support in his initiative, although he did not mention any companies by name.

Specifically, Wheeler is asking the private sector to "offer call-blocking services to their customers now [emphasis omitted]" at no additional cost.

"Consumers want and deserve more control over the calls they receive," he added. "The Commission has done its part, making clear that phone companies face no legal barriers to helping consumers block unwanted calls with the use of robocall blocking technology. "

Bottom line, Wheeler stated that once Congress and the necessary courts gives its full blessings, the "Commission will push hard for strong, pro-consumer limits to robocalls and other unwanted calls."
