Disney, Paramount Enjoy Box Office Spoils With 'Zootopia' And '10 Cloverfield Lane'
After Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS)'s "Zootopia" dominated the box office in its first week, expectations were raised the animated pic would do well in its sophomore frame.
The movie is looking at another first place finish with a $50 million second weekend bringing its total earnings to around $142 million. In terms of long-term success that bode wells for "Zootopia," which right now is performing better than both "Big Hero 6" and "Frozen" did at this time in their release. The movie is playing well with both kids and adults and seems poised to continue that success in subsequent weeks.

Paramount Pictures, a subsidiary of Viacom, Inc. (NYSE: VIA), is also seeing success for the first time this year following disappointing numbers for "Zoolander 2" and "Whisky Tango Foxtrot." The studio's "10 Cloverfield Land," a described "blood relative" to 2008 hit "Cloverfield," will place second with around $25 million.
Produced on small scale budget, reportedly in the mid-teens, the film has performed especially well in IMAX theaters. Surprisingly, the movie is also doing well with critics having amassed a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Conversely, Sony (NYSE: SNE) isn't seeing the same luck with its Sacha Baron Cohen film "The Brothers Grimsby," which will open in a distant eighth place. The film is expected to earn just $3 million, making it Cohen's lowest debut for a solo film.
Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (USA) (NYSE: LGF)'s "The Perfect Match" and Focus Features (NASDAQ: CMCSA) "The Young Messiah," which were both less heavily promoted and marketed will finish ahead in the sixth and seventh positions, respectively.
