Google Is Still Trying To Make Google+ Happen
  • Shares of Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) have gained more than 35 percent year-to-date.
  • Alphabet has shown impressive growth in key businesses over the past year.
  • However, Google+ has failed to resonate with the consumer, so the company is now revamping the platform.

Mashabe said that Google+ was an "expensive failure," while Forbes offered five reasons why Google+ "died," and a TechCrunch contributor who worked on the platform offered a grim account of what it was like to work on the platform that faced early failures.

With all that said, Google on Tuesday announced in a blog post that it has made some changes to Google+ in order to reintroduce the platform.

According to the blog, Google+ has seen success in two features: Communities, which now average 1.2 million new user joins per day, and Collections, a platform that just launched five months ago and is "growing even faster."

Google said its platform offers users around the world the opportunity to spend time "discovering and sharing things they love." As such, the company has "reimagined Google+ to help them do that."

"Today, we're starting to introduce a fully redesigned Google+ that puts Communities and Collections front and center," the company said in its blog post. "Now focused around interests, the new Google+ is much simpler. And it's more mobile-friendly—we've rebuilt it across web, Android and iOS so that you'll have a fast and consistent experience whether you are on a big screen or small one."
