Disney Helping Bring Back The NFL To Los Angeles
- After more than two decades without a home team, Los Angeles might once again be an NFL city.
- On Wednesday, delegations from St. Louis, San Diego, and Oakland will try and convince the NFL to allow them to keep their teams from relocating to Los Angeles.
- Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger, according to the LA Times, has been appointed by to lead the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders' proposed Carson stadium project.
The owners of the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams have been intending to move their teams to Los Angeles for a while. On Wednesday, the rest of the NFL owners will vote to decide if the teams will or will not be relocated.
The Chargers and the Raiders want to build a stadium (which they will share) in Carson, a suburb in Los Angeles. The $1.7 billion project would be undertaken by a joint venture, Carson Holdings LLC, which will be led by Bob Iger, CEO and Chairman of Walt Disney.
Iger will act as the non-executive chairman of the joint venture, and will be responsible for hiring a president. Moreover, he will strategically lead the project, conceiving the facilities and the overall fan experience.
"Who could we get better to guarantee fan experience than the man who runs the happiest place on earth?" said Carmen Policy, executive director of Carson Holdings, talking about Iger.
In addition, Rams owner Stan Kroenke intends to build a new 80,000-seat stadium for his team in Inglewood, California, which is closer to downtown LA than Carson.
History has shown that NFL owners usually prefer teams to remain at their hometowns, as long as big-enough new stadiums can be built.
