Amazon Rumored to Launch Own Consumables Brand
On Tuesday, Jason Del Rey from AllThingsD noted that Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) could be preparing to launch their own consumables brand.
Rey researched recent job postings from Amazon.com and specifically noted the listing for a financial analyst including the "launch of the Private Label Business in Consumables" in the description. The author further added that the company is searching for a Senior Product Manager for Consumables Private Label to assist in launching "new high quality Amazon-branded products to our global customers.”
Macquarie Capital analyst Ben Schachter commented on Amazon's launch of Pinzon and AmazonBasics, noting the lack of marketing. Schachter added, "In theory, there are a lot of ways they could go with [private labels], but it's not something they really discuss or push on their own site."
Rey focused on the success of Target's (NYSE: TGT) Up & Up private label and Archer Farms Brand, with varying marketing aggressiveness. Further, the author reminds readers that companies such as Webvan have failed in building a successful grocery delivery business.
Mark Mahaney, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets commented, "I'm not surprised they are doing this, but I'd be surprised if it had a material impact."
