The Evolution of Social Networking is Happening…Today!?

We should be really excited, apparently.

I know that today is the long-awaited day of Facebook announcement(s), but it's hard to feel anything but concern. Not too long ago, Mark Zuckerberg bored us to tears when Facebook announced its partnership with Skype. Zuckerberg's speech was so boring that I actually compared his words to Nytol, knowing full well that some of my readers may be too young to get the joke.

And now we're supposed to be excited about another Facebook announcement? Really?

Mashable's Ben Parr has some encouraging comments, saying that he has “seen what Facebook is launching on Thursday, and it's going to change the world of social media.”

“On Thursday, developers will be elated, users will be shell-shocked and the competition will look ancient,” Parr wrote. “On Thursday, Facebook will be reborn. Prepare yourselves for the evolution of social networking.”

Those are some pretty powerful words. Users will be shell-shocked, and we should prepare ourselves for an evolution, it seems.

If it weren't for Facebook's history with hype and disappointing announcements, I might be very excited right now. But there's one thing we have to remember: it's just Facebook, a site that is doing everything it can to mirror Twitter (with the new Subscribe feature) and Google+ (NASDAQ: GOOG) to ensure that you never have to use another social networking site again.

But unless today's announcement makes life better, more exciting, more productive, or offer some kind of improvement I can't even conceive of, then I doubt that I – or anyone else – will be shell-shocked.
