GM Finds A Way To Promote Cadillac EV On 'Tesla's Territory' In China

General Motors Co‘s (NYSE:GM) Cadillac is reportedly setting up test drives at Tesla Supercharger stations in China.

What Happened: General Motors offered test drives on their Cadillac Lyriq — its all-electric SUV — at a Tesla supercharger station in Shanghai Jinqiao, Tesla enthusiast Twitter account @JayinShanghai said in a tweet first noted on Electrek. The Cadillac sales team approached Tesla owners and tried to offer free test drives, Jay said.

“Competition is great but this is Tesla's territory. Shameless cold calling by Cadillac,” he added.

Why Is It Important: In 2022, Cadillac sold more units in China than it did in the U.S. In China, the company sold over 198,000 units while in the U.S., the sales numbers were around 135,000 units. Overall, General Motors and its joint ventures delivered more than 2.3 million vehicles in China in 2022.

However, Tesla's domestic sales in China totaled 121,619 units in the fourth quarter alone.

Earlier this month, General Motors announced a voluntary separation option for employees in an attempt at cost reduction. The cost reduction program announced in late January aims to cut costs, amounting to $2 billion, in the next two years.
