Sudan Sentences Men For Wearing Women's Clothing

Share:

A tweet from Breaking News says that the country of Sudan is sentencing 19 men to 30 lashes and a fine for wearing women's clothing and makeup. This case exposes Sudanese sensitivity toward homosexuality. The 19 men were charged with violating the country's public morality codes. The punishment was carried out in the country's capital, Khartoum.

Sudanese newspapers reported that the men were dressed that way for a marriage celebration of same-sex partners. When sentencing was issued by the court, there was no mention of a ceremony. A lawyer who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the subject, said, "These people did not get a chance for justice. Public opinion and the media prejudged them and lawyers were too scared to come and defend them."

Islamic sharia law has been intertwined with Sudan's legal code and was a major issue in a 2005 peace deal which ended a civil war that lasted nearly two decades between Khartoum's Islamists and the Christian and animist southern rebels.
