Is Grand Theft Auto Coming To Netflix Games?

Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX) is reportedly eyeing a slice of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) gaming universe to bolster its growing Netflix Games service, according to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal.

While not directly related to the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, Netflix has allegedly been in talks with Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), the publisher behind the GTA franchise, to secure licensing rights for a GTA-themed game.

As it stands, Netflix Games primarily offers mobile gaming experiences, accessible through the Netflix mobile app. However, the streaming giant aspires to expand its gaming library to include titles that can be streamed on TV or PC.

Netflix's venture into gaming has already involved a substantial investment, estimated at around $1 billion, as per the Wall Street Journal.

The company is reportedly looking to hire more game executives to explore AAA game development. Nevertheless, the exact impact of this investment on Netflix's bottom line remains uncertain, as the games are bundled with existing subscriptions.

The current popularity of Netflix's gaming offerings seems limited, with just 70.5 million total downloads as of September 2023 and an estimated less than 1% of subscribers playing these games daily.

A potential Grand Theft Auto collaboration could either boost Netflix Games' appeal or be overshadowed by the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 on other platforms.
