7 Innovations From Google Since Its Last Quarterly Report

Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) is one of the world’s leading companies when it comes to technological innovation. With Google’s quarterly earnings release, today is a good time to take a look at what the company has been up to over the past three months. Here’s a list of seven Google innovations since the company’s last earnings report.

1. Google Fiber

Google Fiber Internet service is old news to residents of Kansas City, Missouri; Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah, but earlier this month Google announced the planned launch of Fiber in four new cities: Atlanta, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. The gigabit Internet service currently costs customers about $80 per month.

2. Android 5.0 Lollipop

Google announced its new operating system Android 5.0 Lollipop November 2014. Lollipop is possibly the most radical redesign of Android yet, with key changes to the way that digital elements interact.

3. Live Channels For Android TV App

In December 2014, Google launched this new app, which will allow users with an Android TV device to watch live network television programming.

4. Project Ara

Google recently announced the launch of Project Ara, modular smartphones that users can customize by assembling preferred modules. The initial test launch will be in Puerto Rico only, but Project Ara could soon make its way to the U.S. as well.

5. Music Key

In November, Google launched Music Key, YouTube’s new streaming music subscription service. Since music streaming has become more popular in recent years, Google is attempting to compete for market share in the space against the likes of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Pandora Media Inc (NYSE: P) and Spotify.

6. Google Contributor

Google unveiled Google Contributor back in November 2014. The new service offers web users a way to avoid Google ads on certain websites for a small monthly fee.

7. Child-Friendly Products

Google revealed in December 2014 that it is currently developing child-friendly versions of its search engine, Chrome browser and YouTube video-sharing service. Google vice-president Pavni Diwanji recently explained that the project is intended to “change our products to be fun and safe for children.”

It’s possible that a few of these innovations will end up as flops, but Google’s spirit of change and technological advancement has played a huge role in shaping the modern Internet experience worldwide.
